“Upcountry Rise Walk”
We are retracing the journeys of the groups brought from South India to work in the plantations of the Sri Lankan highlands. Over the years tens of thousands of people who landed in Mannar made the perilous journey to Matala on foot. They faced many diseases. They travelled by clearing forests. They also faced wild animals bravely. Many, up to 40% of them, died en route and were either buried there or their bodies were disposed of. This journey invites you to join us on this liberating journey to connect with their roots to reminisce, reflect on and retrace the tracks of the first generation who made this arduous journey two hundred years ago.
The “Upcountry Rise Walk ” is about the future – it is about the demand for recognition of the Hill Tamil community as an independent and equal community in Sri Lanka. Since they came to this country 200 years ago, their existence has been seen as a struggle. These demands arise from their repeated appeals to successive Sri Lankan governments to be recognized as a people with a unique Sri Lankan identity and to be treated on a par with other mainstream communities. This journey echoes the struggles of this community for an identity as a part of the people of independent Sri Lanka alongside other mainstream communities.
“Upcountry Rise Walk ” – The mission of this mission is to create a basic level understanding of the history, struggles, achievements, contributions, present socio-economic political status and aspirations of the Malayaka Tamil community among the fellow citizens Sinhalese, Sri Lankan Tamils, Muslims and fellow citizens.
This journey is an open call to all. Express your appreciation for the contribution made by the women and men of the Highlands over two centuries. We invite you all to join your voices in support of the hill Tamil people.
“வேர்களை மீட்டு உரிமை வென்றிட”
தென்னிந்திய பகுதியிலிருந்து இலங்கையின் பெருந்தோட்ட பயிர் செய்கைக்காக அழைத்து வரப்பட்ட மக்களின் 200 வது ஆண்டு நிறைவினை முன்னிட்டு 28 ஜூலை 2023 இல் தொடங்கிய “வேர்களை மீட்டு உரிமை வென்றிட” எனும் விடுதலைப் பயணத்தில் தென்னிந்திய திருச்சபை யாழ் ஆதீனத்தின் பேராயர் பேரருட்கலாநிதி. வே. பத்மதயாளன் அவர்களும், அருட்பணியாளர்கள் சதீஸ் டேனியல், ஆதீன செயலர், செபாஸ்டின் ஆண்டனி, திருநாவுக்கரசு டிக்சன் ஆகியோர் பங்குபெற்றனர்.
கடுமையான பயணம்
இலங்கை மலைநாட்டின் பெருந்தோட்டங்களில் தொழில் புரிவதற்காக தென்னிந்தியாவிலிருந்து அழைத்து வரப்பட்ட குழுக்களின் பயணத்தின் தடங்களை நாம் மீளவும் பின்தொடர்ந்து வருகின்றோம். பல ஆண்டுகளாக முன் மன்னாரில் தரையிறங்கிய பல்லாயிரகணக்கானோர் மாத்தளை நோக்கிய ஆபத்தான பயணத்தை கால் நடையாகவே மேற்கொண்டனர். அவர்கள் நோய்களை எதிர்கொண்டனர். காடுகளைத் துப்புரவு செய்து பயணித்தனர். அத்துடன் காட்டு விலங்குகளையும் துணிவுடன் எதிர்கொண்டனர். அவர்களில் பலர், சுமார் 40% வரையிலானோர் பயணிக்கும் வழியிலேயே மரணமடைந்ததுடன், அவர்கள் அங்கேயே புதைக்கப்பட்டனர் அல்லது அவர்களது உடல்கள் அகற்றப்பட்டன.
இருநூறு ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு இந்தக் கடினமான பயணத்தை மேற்கொண்ட முதல் தலைமுறையினர் மீதான நினைவுகளைவும், பிரதிபலிப்பையும் மேற்கொள்வதற்கும் தடங்களை நினைவு கூறுவதற்கும் அவர்களின் வேர்களுடனான தொடர்பினை ஏற்படுத்தும் இவ்விடுதலைப் பயணத்தில் எம்முடன் இணைந்து கொள்ளுமாறு இப்பயணம் அழைக்கின்றது.
தனித்துவ அடையாளத்தை நோக்கிய பயணம்
“மலையக எழுச்சிப் பயணம்” எதிர்காலத்தைப் பற்றியதுமாகும் – இது இலங்கையின் சுதந்திரமான மற்றும் சமமான பிரசைகளாக மலையகத் தமிழ் சமுதாயம் அங்கீகரிக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்னும் கோரிக்கையைப் பற்றியது. 200 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னர் நாம் இந்த நாட்டிற்கு வந்ததில் இருந்து இவர்களது இருப்பு போராட்டமாகவே காணப்பட்டு வருகின்றது. இலங்கையின் தனித்துவ அடையாளம் கொண்ட மக்களாக அங்கீகரிக்கவும் மற்றும் ஏனைய பிரதான சமூகங்களுக்கு இணையான நடாத்த வேண்டும் என்பதற்காக தொடர்ந்து பதவிக்கு வந்த இலங்கை அரசாங்கங்களிடம் அவர்கள் தொடர்ச்சியாக முன்வைத்த முறையீடுகளிலிருந்து இந்தக் கோரிக்கைகள் எழுகின்றன. இது ஏனைய பிரதான சமூகங்களுக்கு இணையாக சுதந்திர இலங்கையின் ஒரு பகுதி மக்கள் என்னும் ஓர் அடையாளத்திற்கான இந்தச் சமுதாயத்தின் போராட்டங்களை இப்பயணம் எதிரொலிக்கின்றது.
“மலையக எழுச்சிப் பயணம்” – என்பது சக சகோதர குடிமக்கள் உடனான சிங்களவர்கள், இலங்கைத் தமிழர்கள், முஸ்லீம்கள் மற்றும் சக சகோதர குடிமக்கள் மத்தியில் மலையகத் தமிழ் சமுதாயத்தின் வரலாறு, போராட்டங்கள், சாதனைகள், பங்களிப்புகள், தற்போதைய சமூக பொருளாதார அரசியல் அந்தஸ்து மற்றும் விருப்பங்கள் ஆகியவை பற்றிய அடிப்படை மட்டத்திலான புரிதலை ஏற்படுத்துவதே இந்தப் பயணத்தின் இலக்காகும்.
இந்த மலையக எழுச்சிப் பயணம் – பகிரங்கமானது. இரண்டு நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக மலையகத்தின் பெண்களும் ஆண்களும் ஆற்றிய பங்களிப்பிற்கான உங்கள் மதிப்புணர்வை வெளிப்படுத்தவும். மலையக தமிழ் மக்களுக்கு ஆதரவாக உங்கள் குரலையும் இணைத்துக் கொள்வதற்கும் நாம் உங்கள் அனைவரையும் அழைக்கின்றோம்.
தலைமன்னாரில் இருந்து போசலை வழியாக மாத்தளை வரையிலான இந்த நடைபயணம் இம்மாதம் 28 ஆம் திகதி தொடங்கி ஆகஸ்ட் 12 திகதி நிறைவடைகிறது.
