In a grand inaugural function held today at the esteemed Uduvil Girls’ College, the campus resonated with the spirit of celebration as the institution marked its bicentennial milestone. Aptly titled ‘Anthizo’, meaning blossom in Greek, the event commemorated 200 years of educational excellence and empowerment.

Founded by the visionary American missionary, Harriet Winslow, as the Female Central School two centuries ago, Uduvil Girls’ College has since transcended societal barriers and evolved into a beacon of academic prowess and female empowerment. Despite initial resistance towards educating girls, Harriet Winslow’s dedication laid the foundation for an institution that would shape generations of young women.

Over its illustrious history, the college has been guided by ten Principals, each leaving an indelible mark while upholding the institution’s traditional values. The present Principal, Ms. Rosanna Kulendran, continues this legacy of excellence, emphasizing compassion, empathy, and capability building.

Addressing the gathering as the chief guest, Mrs. Shiranee Mills, a distinguished alumna and former Principal, lauded the college’s longstanding commitment to breaking social barriers and nurturing talent. The event showcased the students’ talents through captivating presentations, lively dances, and soulful musical performances, all reflecting the high standards synonymous with Uduvil.

Highlighting the students’ ingenuity, Mrs. Mills praised the bicentennial songs and logos, all crafted by the students themselves. It is noteworthy that Uduvil Girls’ College is fully governed by the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India, with a dedicated Board of Directors overseeing its operations.

The occasion was graced by the presence of Bishop Emeritus Rt. Rev. Dr. S. Jebanesan and the incumbent Bishop of Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India Rt. Rev. Dr. V. Pathmathayalan, underscoring the significance of the event within the religious community.

As the celebrations unfold throughout the year, it is evident that the students, Principal, and staff are poised to ensure a fitting tribute to the rich history and enduring legacy of Uduvil Girls’ College.
