On this Hospital Sunday 2025, the Jaffna Diocese of the Church of South India (JDCSI) reflects on its enduring commitment to medical missions, inspired by the words of Jesus: “For I was sick and you looked after me.” (Matthew 25:36, NIV)

The roots of our medical mission trace back to the early 19th century with the arrival of the American Ceylon Mission (ACM) in Jaffna. Among the pioneering medical missionaries was Dr. Samuel Fisk Green, who began his thirty-year medical practice and training program in 1846. He founded in Manipay what later became Green Memorial Hospital. This fledgling hospital was also used to train more than 60 locals in Western medicine as fully fledged doctors. It was Sri Lankaโ€™s first medical school as well as the only school until the present day to teach medicine in a local language.

Today, under the guidance of our 5th bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. Pathmathayalan, the JDCSI continues to uphold this legacy. The bishop has been instrumental in expanding healthcare initiatives, emphasizing community health programs, and supporting the professional development of medical personnel within our diocese. His vision ensures that our medical mission adapts to contemporary challenges while remaining rooted in our foundational Christian values.

As we commemorate Hospital Sunday, we are reminded of the words of Dr. Samuel Fisk Green: “The true physician is also a servant of the Lord, ministering to the needs of both body and soul.” May this guiding principle continue to inspire our endeavors in healthcare and spiritual outreach.
